About Us

Who We Are

Our congregation has an extensive history of reaching and growing people to live for and love Jesus. Compassion found its genesis when it was incorporated in 1879 as First Baptist Church of South Chicago. At the time, the newly formed congregation was located at 90th and Houston in Chicago. By 1953, the church relocated to 9300 S. Merrill Ave and renamed itself Merrill Avenue Baptist Church. However, in August of 2011, after building our current worship facility, we relocated to 2650 E. 95th Street and renamed ourselves Compassion Baptist Church.

With a membership from all over the South Side, South Suburbs and Northwest Indiana, Compassion still meets in the same section of the city in which it was constituted. After nearly 140 years of faithful ministry presence, we continue to strive to understand, engage with, and serve our community and city for the sake of Jesus Christ.
